The strength and durability of concrete makes it an important structural material since the Roman era. Unfortunately, concrete’s porous nature allows it to absorb water and soluble salts, which can be destructive. These salts can also delaminate epoxies and other coatings that are traditionally applied to honed and stained concrete. When steel reinforcement is embedded in concrete to increase its strength, concrete’s absorption of salts, particularly chlorides, will eventually cause corrosion issues. Which makes protection of concrete slabs from environmental factors critical to preserving durability over time. Application of concrete sealants over new or existing concrete surfaces is the best solution to this problem.
Sweet Concrete helps prevent corrosion problems in your concrete as part of our concrete resurfacing process. After the proper cleaning and / or honing has been completed, we apply a permanent, water based, VOC free, penetrating sealant to the concrete that we’re working on. This sealant penetrates deep into the concrete and reacts with the free lime and alkali present in all concrete. The sealant then crystallizes while it solidifies into the concrete. This creates a permanent internal seal that becomes part of the concrete but still leaves the concrete breathable. This is especially important when restoring outdoor concrete. These concrete sealants also protect the concrete without changing the color or texture of the surface.
Our amazing concrete sealant contains a proprietary catalyst which causes a chain reaction to start. It allows the sealant to penetrate below the surface of the concrete where it pursues moisture down through the substrate. Upon contact with the free alkali and calcium hydroxides, it reacts instantly to form a silica gel membrane on the moist surfaces of all the voids and particulate (sand, aggregate and cement), immediately waterproofing the substrate. Over time, this silica gel membrane dehydrates and hardens into a solid, yet breathable, glass impregnated mass which provides a permanent seal and moisture barrier, as well as increased surface hardness/dusting resistance and compressive and flexural strengths.
